Call me crazy, but to me tacos are Mexico’s greatest gift to humanity. I don’t want to belittle Mexico’s contribution to the world, the tacos are that good.

Because how can you not love this Mexican delicacy? With tacos you get flavors that melt on your tongue, deliciously seasoned beef, sweet tomatoes, spicy peppers, crisp lettuce, sweet onions, spicy cilantro, delicious sour cream, creamy guacamole, tangy salsa and crumbly cheese.

So imagine all those flavors and textures wrapped in a soft tortilla bread. It’s definitely a feast in my mouth! Seriously, whoever invented tacos deserves an award.


But while tacos are undoubtedly fantastic, they are not a complete meal. For a real fiesta, you need some side dishes!

1. Chips and Salsa

Let’s start with the classics, shall we? If you’re serving tacos at your next party, chances are you’re going for a Mexican theme, right? And other than tacos, what is more reminiscent of Mexican food than a big bowl of chips with a little salsa?

Chances are you’ve already made salsa for your tacos, so it takes very little effort to prepare them. Optional, but you can also order a bowl of cheese sauce and guacamole with it to earn points.


Another thing I like about chips is that they fill up and keep your friends full. Happy glasses mean happy celebration!

2. Corn pudding

If you want to complement your savory dish with something sweet, I recommend Mexican corn pudding. Contains almost all nutritional requirements – sweet corn (vegetarian), milk, cheese (dairy) and eggs (protein).


The only thing missing are the carbs, and that makes it perfect for tacos. Together, tacos and corn pudding are a complete meal, not to mention delicious together!

3. Mexican Coleslow

What is the difference between Mexican coleslaw and regular coleslaw? It contains essentially the same ingredients – cabbage and red onions – but uses a dressing instead of mayonnaise. That’s why I like to serve this dish with tacos.

First, it fits our theme. Second, it’s a healthy contrast to rich tacos. But if you prefer mayonnaise, it’s just as delicious with tacos.

In addition to the above ingredients, the Mexican salad also includes corn, black beans, chopped bell pepper, avocado, jalapenos, cilantro, and finally cumin, two ways: Cumin seeds and ground cumin. That’s twice the taste and twice the benefits!

4. Jikama with mango salad

Jicama is a Mexican yam. Many people are not familiar with this plant and its taste properties, so they try to stay away from it. But I highly recommend giving it a shot, because it can really make a difference in your dinner.

The jicama tastes like a cross between a pear and a potato and goes well with sweet mangoes. Add honey, red onion and lime juice and you have a perfect salad for your next taco night.

5. Spanish rice

Rice is a Mexican staple, so don’t be surprised to find it in many classic Mexican dishes. Taco is one of them.

You can serve steamed rice this way, but what’s the fun in that? Lightly season the rice with the black beans and green chilies. Then add coriander, cumin and lime. So simple, but so delicious!

Would you like something more fiery and cheesy? Here’s a suggestion: Rice stew with chili and cheese. To make, mix rice of choice, sour cream, cheese, cream cheese and chili of choice (I use Ortega chili in mine).

Then divide the rice mixture into the baking dish and put it in the oven. Cook until cheese is melted. That’s it!

Want a healthy alternative to rice? Use quinoa instead! Combine quinoa, black beans, corn, zucchini and tomatoes and season with fajita seasoning. Tasty and nutritious.

6. Mexican black beans

Beans are another staple of Mexican cuisine. And you know what goes well with beans? Corn!

In addition to the tandem’s excellent taste, together they make a colorful page.  Serve the bean and corn salad with the tacos and your friends will love you even more.

Baked beans are another tried-and-true accompaniment to tacos. It’s a great sauce for tacos and chips because it’s sweet, earthy and creamy.

You can also finish your tacos with baked beans for a very special base. Moreover, these plant-based protein dishes are also very satiating, so your guests will go home with a full belly.

Let’s get one thing straight: The beans are not baked twice. So if you’re worried they’re too greasy, don’t worry!

Roasted beans are called frijoles refritos in Spanish. The term refritos means well fried, not double fried. So the name may be misleading, but refried beans are fried (or boiled) only once after cooking.

7. Mexican sweet potatoes

Mexican sweet potatoes are a great side dish for tacos, but they are so hearty that they can also be considered a staple food. It’s full of so much flavor from the sweet potatoes, corn, black bean salsa and a creamy cilantro dressing.

Another way to prepare sweet potatoes is to roast them. Fry in avocado oil and season with salt and garlic powder until golden brown.

While you’re at it, add some broccoli and grill it! Serve warm with creamy sriracha sauce. Make the sauce, mix the mayonnaise, Sriracha, honey, and it’s ready.

Potato salad is always a hit with the holidays, but here’s a fun variation: Use sweet potatoes instead. I think this version is better than the original because it is sweeter and has an interesting texture.

Stir in roasted sweet potatoes, corn, red peppers, black beans, lime juice and your favorite dressing. Top each serving with cojita cheese. Perfect!

8. Elote (Mexican street maize)

Another side dish you should try to give your banquet a Mexican touch is eloquence. This may seem complicated because of the foreign name, but it is easy to do.

Just roast corn on the cob and spread with mayonnaise and sour cream. Sprinkle with chili powder and finish with coquita, feta or queso fresca cheese.

9. Pepper salad

Mexicans love peppers so much they make a salad out of them! This dish is full of vitamins and minerals. So if you want a healthier side dish, look no further.

For the pepper salad, mix the red, yellow and green peppers with the red onions. In another bowl, mix the red wine or champagne with the chopped garlic, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.

Pour the dressing over the vegetables and add a little coquita or feta. Sprinkle with cilantro and you’re done.

10. Serving drinks with tacos

Enough about the food! Let’s get to the drinks, shall we?

Because besides the taco filling, your party wouldn’t be complete without a nice drink to top off the meal. So, what drinks go well with tacos? I have three suggestions.

Let’s start with the classic lemon iced tea. It is a cold drink that refreshes you after a heavy dinner. A simple but very effective smile on the face of friends.


Then let’s spice it up with some alcohol! The best flavors for your Mexican dinner are lemon and mint, and a lemon-mint mojito is the best cocktail to bring them to life.

Finally, there is a healthier option for fitness buffs: Red wine. Make it more exciting by adding brandy and orange and you and your friends will love it.
