Don’t worry, because whether you’re looking for savory side dishes like beans and rice or light dishes like salads and soups, I’ve got you covered.

So if you’re serving tamales at your next event, make one of these side dishes and your party will be a hit.

Tamales are a traditional Mexican delicacy made from masa or corn dough. While traditional tamales are cooked as such, modern tamales are usually filled with meat, chili, cheese, vegetables and fruits.

The tamales are steamed in a banana leaf or corn husk, which are then used as plates to eat.

Tamales are complicated and time consuming. It even takes several people to do it! Therefore, they are reserved for special occasions.

The most common tamales are filled with pork and cooked in a chili sauce. But there are also dessert tamales filled with pineapple and raisins.

What to serve with tamales

1. Eggs and Salsa

The tamales are delicious on their own, but it’s not a bad idea to add a few decorations.

The simple topping of fried eggs gives your tamales a flavor as rich as umami. The golden yolk running through your tamale? That’s great.

A little salsa and cilantro will also give your tamales more zest and flavor. If you want them spicier, sprinkle them with chili flakes or cayenne powder.

2. Rice with coriander

Rice is a staple of Mexican cuisine, and yes, it goes well with tamales, especially with meaty fillings.

For more flavor, cook the rice in chicken broth instead of water. Then season and color with a mixture of chopped cilantro, chives and green onions, jalapeños and lime juice.

3. Black bean soup

Black bean soup is a staple of Mexican cuisine, so it makes sense to pair it with your tamales. It’s hearty, creamy and nutritious too!

All you need are four ingredients: It’s just a combination of black beans, chicken broth, salsa and spices. To make it even more exciting, you can add sour cream, guacamole and tortilla chips to your soup!

4. Fresh fruit

Sometimes a bowl of fresh fruit is all you need to spice up your meal. The fruit is refreshing, sweet, juicy and cleanses the palate of your rich dish.

And you can pick all the fruit you want! Watermelon, mango, oranges and honeydew are all perfect. Give it a nice kick by sprinkling some chili powder or cayenne pepper over the fruit of your choice.

5. Jicama lettuce

The jicama salad is crunchy, sweet and delicious. The crunch of the jicama contrasts nicely with the spongy tamale. And what’s more, it’s a very simple dish to make.

Just put long narrow strips of jicama, carrots and cabbage in the bowl. For the dressing, mix the lime juice, vinegar, anchovy powder, honey and oil. Season the dressing to taste with salt and pepper.

Pour the dressing over the vegetables and stir. Add cilantro for extra flavor. You can also add mango and orange slices for a touch of sweetness.

6. Mexican corn bread

Mexican corn bread is full of chili, cheddar cheese and, of course, corn. The combination of sweet, salty, savory and spicy gives it so much flavor! And that crumbly texture adds an extra dimension to the dish.

And since tamales are usually made of corn dough, they go well with corn bread. Yummy!

7. Corn soup

The corn powder is soft, creamy and so buttery. Its richness makes it an excellent accompaniment to tamales. You can customize it to your tamales by adding meat and other vegetables like pork, fish, chicken and potatoes.

8. Mexican cream

This thickened cream is perfect for your tamales. There is also a hint of spice that adds an extra dimension to the dish.

Besides the fantastic taste of the tamales, the tacos, burritos and enchiladas are also fantastic.

To prepare the Mexican cream, mix the cream and yogurt in a bowl and let it stand at room temperature for 2 days. This makes the mixture incredibly thick and creamy. Add a little lime juice and salt to taste and you’re done!

9. Cold Avocado Soup

Avocados are so rich and creamy on their own, but you can turn them into a fresh, velvety soup. Pair it with your tamales for a nice contrast in texture and a splash of bright color.

Puree avocado slices, chicken broth, lemon juice, cilantro, water and a mixture of cooked onion, chili and garlic. Season with salt and pepper and refrigerate for 3 hours.

Finish this silky soup with a spoonful of sour cream and a handful of croutons. Delicious.

10. Mexico Street Corn

Elote is a popular street food in Mexico. A grilled corn on the cob, but with more flavorful ingredients. It’s delicious, savory and goes well with tamales!

Take the corn cob and grill it for 6-10 minutes. While you wait, make a mixture of mayonnaise, chili powder, black pepper and garlic salt. Cut this mixture into the corn on the grill.

Sprinkle with cotija cheese and serve with lime wedges on the side. It’s incredible!

11. Dessert: Mexican wedding cookies

For dessert, we have the traditional Mexican wedding cookies. These delicate balls are soft, buttery and full of nutty deliciousness!

These Mexican wedding cookies, also known as snowballs, are covered in powdered sugar, which gives them a great look.

And you don’t need much to make these delicious treats! All you need is butter, flour, powdered sugar, salt and pecans. So simple, but so delicious. It’s the perfect way to finish off Mexican cuisine.
