Sloppy Joes is a no-brainer, not to mention super cheap.

So go ahead, invite your childhood friends over and enjoy this sweet and salty sandwich for old time’s sake.

But before you plan your meal, think about what you’re going to serve with Sloppy Joes.

I mean, it’s a delicious meal in and of itself, but why not spruce up your guests?

Whether it’s a weekend family dinner, a game night or a gathering with friends, here are 16 side dishes that go perfectly with sloppy joes.

Grab a plate and let’s get started!

1. Baked beans

Sloppy Joes and baked beans are probably the most classic combination. I don’t know whose idea it was, but they really complement each other. The preparation of this side dish is quite simple. Just add brown sugar and bacon to the beans and cook. Shh, shh, shh!

2. Potato crisps

How can a bag of chips be perfect for your sloppy joe? It’s light and crispy, which contrasts nicely with the softness of the bun. Use the chips to pick up and eat the meat that falls off your sandwich. You can also eat them as nachos and cover the chips with some of the delicious meat sauce. Yummy! The best part is that it’s easy to make: Open the bag, put the chips in a bowl and you’re done.

If you want a healthier option and want to eat without guilt, you can make your own chips instead. Season the thinly sliced potatoes with salt, pepper and paprika and put them in the oven.

3. Tater points

For me, there’s nothing better than potatoes and cheese. These two really are a perfect couple. So why don’t you and your friends make cheesecake toys to go with your sloppy joes? These two dishes are so decadent and delicious that you’ll want to make more.

4. Macaroni and cheese

These two are made for heaven. Macaroni with cheese goes perfectly with sweet and savory sloppy joes. Classic comfort food that even kids will love.

Quick tip: For an even creamier macaroni with cheese, use cream instead of milk in the recipe. You can also use a combination of half milk and half cream.

5. Potato salad

In case you hadn’t noticed: I like potatoes. And as a side dish, the classic potato salad never disappoints. It’s hearty, creamy, tender and easy to prepare.

Here’s a tip on how to make the salad: Boil the potatoes whole, do not slice them! This way the sweetness of the potatoes is preserved.

Once cooked (and cooled to room temperature), mix with Dijon mustard, pickles, vegetables of your choice, sour cream and mayonnaise.

6. Sweet potato hash

Sweet potatoes! The sweet potato hash is sweet and starchy, which goes well with the flavor of the sandwich. Plus, the crunchy sweet potato pieces contrast with the sweetness of the sloppy joes.

7. Dill pickles

The spiciness and crunch of the dill pickles is a wonderful contrast to your sloppy joes. They are also easy to make at home!

We need cucumbers, of course. Cut the cucumbers in half lengthwise and use a spiralizer to get nicely shaped vegetables. Then take a red onion and spiral it.

Put the cucumber and onion spirals in a jar and add some chopped dill leaves. Pour the water and vinegar into a pot and season with salt and pepper.

Cover tightly and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 4 hours.

8. Pasta salad

This side dish is ideal if you are feeding a hungry crowd. It’s savory and flavorful, just like Sloppy Joe’s, making it the perfect combination.

9. Pasta salad

Give your sloppy joe dinner an Italian twist by pairing it with a rustic pasta salad. Imagine a bowl of penne pasta, cucumbers, basil, black olives, cherry tomatoes and a little red wine vinegar. This is the perfect dish to go with your decadent sandwich.

10. Maize on the cob

Chances are you and your guests will make a mess of your sloppy joes, so why not join them with corn on the cob? They are just as satisfying to eat as the Sloppy Joes, and the flavors and aromas are a perfect match!

If you have the time, you can make your own Mexican corn and create a beauty. Don’t worry, it’s not that hard.

Brush the corn cobs with cold butter in preparation. Then grill the corn for 15-20 minutes. While they are grilling, mix the mayonnaise and chili powder. After grilling, slice the corn with mayonnaise and chili. Then top the corn with the crumbled coquita cheese, peppers and cilantro.

See, that wasn’t so hard, was it? Don’t forget to take a picture of the whole group in the middle of dinner as a memento of the fun….. and the mess!

11. Koleslow

Coleslaw and Sloppy Joe’s are a great pairing. Moreover, the cool temperature of the coleslaw provides the perfect contrast. Soft, creamy and always delicious. This combination always reminds me of a summer picnic.

12. Stuffed peppers

I know Sloppy Joe’s is a foodie star, but these stuffed poblano peppers are so irresistibly delicious, they might just steal the show.

How do you fill your peppers? You will need to add some grains like brown or white rice and quinoa for the base. Add your favorite beans and vegetables and finish with cilantro and cheese. Put it in the oven and it’s done!

13. Garlic bread

In other words, a great way to clean your dirty, meaty plate. Sandwich and bread? Hell, yes! This is especially perfect if you want to feed a hungry crowd. Whether you buy them from your favorite bakery or make them yourself, they are sure to please.

14. Onion rings

Here’s another classic side dish that will make your dinner even more exciting. The onion rings provide a crunchy note that balances the softness of the sandwich. And just like the Sloppy Joe’s, they also bring out the baby in you! Here’s a tip for preparing onion rings: If you want them extra crispy, add cornstarch to the batter. You can also add beer to the dough.

15. Cauliflower puree

If you’re obsessed with mashed potatoes, but you’re trying to live healthier, this side dish is for you. Cauliflower puree doesn’t taste the same, of course, but it’s just as delicious! Try it and I guarantee you won’t regret it.

For the cheese, I recommend using fresh cheese and goat cheese. This will give you a lightly textured cauliflower puree. Serve it with your delicious and hearty sloppy joe and you will experience pure happiness.

16. French fries

I can’t finish this list without this classic side dish. You can never really go wrong with sloppy joes and fries. The fries are salty and crispy, a great way to balance the tenderness of a sandwich. And what better way to do that than with a few bites of fries?
