Dugouts are a classic comfort food. These dumplings are often filled with mashed potatoes, sautéed onions, sauerkraut, bacon, mushrooms, spinach and cheese.

When we hear the word dumpling, we almost automatically think of Asian cuisine. But did you know that Europe also has its own version of these little stuffed dumplings? Pierogi, or perogi, are crescent-shaped dumplings brought to us by the Poles.

Pirogi are made of flour or puff pastry and are traditionally filled with cheese and potatoes. Some varieties are filled with meat, such as pork, veal, beef, chicken, fish and even lamb, duck and goose.

Others prefer to fill them with vegetables like mushrooms, sauerkraut, spinach and broccoli. But they’re not just savory fillings – they can also be filled with sweet fruits like berries, apricots and apples for a savory dessert.

 

And of course nothing beats home-cooked meals, but buying frozen muscle yogis at the supermarket is much easier. Of course they’re not as tasty as homemade, but if you make a nice side dish or filling to go with them, they quickly become a great meal!

Another advantage of perogies is their versatility. You don’t necessarily have to serve European dishes with it. There are many ways to prepare store-bought pierogies, and I’m here to tell you about them.

So if you don’t know what to serve with pierogies, no more worries! I got your back. Here are 10 tasty side dishes that will make your pierogies an unforgettable meal.

 

1. Bacon and onion

Let’s start with the traditional Polish stuffing. Cheese and potato perogies are usually topped with crisp, smoked bacon and sweet, caramelized onions. This filling has an excellent balance between sweet and salty and surprises the taste of the meatballs.

 

To prepare, fry the bacon in a pan. Remove the bacon and eat the onions in the bacon fat. Add butter for extra flavor and season with salt and pepper. Pour in a little beer, which will help soften and caramelize the onions.

Add some fresh herbs like rosemary, basil, parsley and thyme for an earthy flavor.

 

2. Sour cream, onions and mushrooms

Sour cream and onions are another traditional brownie, but you can enhance the flavor even more by adding earthy mushrooms!

Mix wild mushrooms like red pine and porcini with onions, drizzle with butter and season with your favorite herbs and spices. Top your pierogi with sausages and add a blob of sour cream.

3. Kelbasa

This Polish smoked sausage is ridiculously plump and juicy, and tastes great with perogies!

Place the pierogi and kielbasa on a baking sheet to bake. Add some onions and peppers, drizzled with olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper. Put the baby in the oven and bake for 15 minutes.

To prepare, fry the bacon and fry the cabbage in the fat. Add a little oil for more flavor, if desired. You can also season it with garlic powder and paprika to make it even more exciting! That’s it. It’s simple, but the flavors are phenomenal.

 

7. Nachos

Yes, you read that right, nachos! But you don’t have to buy a bag of nachos, because there are perogies for that.

 

For this Mexican variation, bake your dumplings to get crispy dumplings that will make excellent nachos. Then fill the perogies with your favorite nacho toppings – tomatoes, jalapenos, beans and cheese – ….. lots of cheese.

Add a sprinkle of sour cream and guacamole, and you have the perfect fusion of European and Latin American flavors.

 

8. Cranberry Relish

The cranberry flavor is a delicious blend of sweet and savory and goes well with savory baked goods. The flavor profiles not only complement each other, but also add a nice color to your plate.

 

9. Slow-roasted tomatoes

This last filling is perfect for fruit pies. Sprinkle the sweet pierogies with a little powdered sugar and add a knob of butter and whipped cream.
