Everyone in my family loves meatloaf, so it’s only natural that this comfort food is a staple in my house. And while meatloaf is a delicious dish on its own, it often comes with a few extra side dishes.

What to serve with a meat loaf

From cornbread and mashed potatoes to roasted vegetables and carrots glazed with honey, there are hundreds of side dishes that easily complement your meatloaf dish.

But I thought I’d share my favorites with you. So, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you 26 delicious meatloaf side dishes.

1. Row

You already bake the meatloaf, so you can make a quick bread with it!

Bake classic buns to go with an irresistible meatloaf. Use the soft bread to soak up the sauce on your plate!

2. Garlic bread

Besides sandwiches, garlic bread is an excellent side dish for meatloaf. It’s so easy to do! Spread a little butter and cheese on the slices of garlic bread, put them in the oven and bake until the cheese is melted.

Another thing I love about garlic bread is how easy it is to prepare. Add your favorite ingredients. I even tried it with anchovies once and was surprised how delicious it was!

3. Corn bread

If you want a soft, crumbly bread to go with the meatloaf, soft corn bread is the best choice. The texture is unlike any other. And this taste of corn? Irresistible.

4. Mashed potatoes

When it comes to side dishes, potatoes are the star. There are many ways to prepare this versatile plant, and they all go wonderfully with meatloaf.

But perhaps the most classic accompaniment to meatloaf is mashed potatoes. This is my favorite meatloaf dish and I never get tired of it!

The combination of meatloaf and tender potatoes is just perfect. And it couldn’t be easier. Just mash the potatoes and add the butter, cheese and garlic.

5. Potato wedges

Here’s another potato dish that makes a meatloaf meal even more tasty and filling. Potato wedges may be a simple side dish, but they’re also impressive.

The contrast between the sweet appetizer and the crunchy side is to die for! Give these potato wedges even more flavor by topping them with Parmesan cheese and garlic powder.

6. Cauliflower

Tater tots are delicious, but if you’re looking for a healthier option, why not use cauliflower?

I’m telling you, cauliflower is just as delicious, even your kids will love it! This is a great way to steal vegetables without sacrificing flavor.

7. Cauliflower puree

Here’s another cauliflower dish that’s so delicious your kids won’t even know they’re eating vegetables. Cauliflower puree isn’t just good for kids, it’s good for everyone!

It’s a healthy side dish that provides a nutritious contrast to your rich meatloaf.

Here’s a great idea for adding an extra layer of flavor to your mashed cauliflower: Add smoked paprika!

8. Spinach and cream

Creamed spinach is a classic side dish that goes well with an equally classic meatloaf.

How can you not like it? It’s cheese, it’s cream and it’s good for the body! This is another one of those vegetarian dishes that even the kids can’t refuse.

9. French fries

Sweet potatoes may not be as popular, but personally I prefer them to regular potatoes. They have a wonderful sweetness that I can’t live without.

So instead of classic fries, make sweet potato fries. They are perfectly crisp and delicious when cooked, so there is no need to fry them.

They also have that delicate balance of sweet and salty that I love so much. And with the meatloaf, they make a perfect combination.

10. Sweet potatoes Hasselbeck

People make Hasselbeck potatoes all the time. But here’s something interesting, why not use sweet potatoes instead? They are sweet, salty and have a melt-in-your-mouth texture when cooked.

And you know what would make your Hasselbeck sweet potatoes even more delicious? Rich in garlic oil. Don’t worry, it’s very easy to do.

Just whisk the melted butter with the garlic, paprika, parsley, onion, nutmeg, thyme, salt and pepper. Imagine all those flavors settling in the cracks of your baked sweet potato. Ahh. Perfection.

11. Asparagus

Asparagus is a crisp, nutritious vegetable that lends itself to many dishes, including meatloaf. It’s so easy to improve your taste.

A simple seasoning of green onions and butter will do. But if you want more flavor, give it some bacon!

Wrap individual skewers in a strip of bacon, pop them in the oven and you have a divine side dish that you and your guests will love.

12. Honey glazed carrots

Carrots already have a slightly sweet flavor, but when you put them in honey, it’s a treat. This crispy side dish makes a wonderful contrast to your tender, rich meatloaf.

To prepare, slice or dice the carrots. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the brown sugar and honey, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves.

Add the lemon juice and carrots. Mix well and cook until the carrots are tender. Sprinkle with chopped parsley for a delicious color contrast.

13. Macaroni and cheese

This side dish is perfect if you are feeding the little ones! Super creamy, cheesy and so filling. This is the perfect meal to pair with an equally rich meatloaf.

That said, this may not be the best site if you’re serving adults who need to watch what they eat. Because it’s super decadent, they might not be fans of the rich and affluent mix. But children and young at heart will love it!

14. Corn pudding

If you want a soft, creamy meatloaf, you can’t go wrong with this southern dish.

Corn pudding is a creamy pudding filled with refreshing corn. It’s mostly sweet, but if you prefer the spicy side, you can do that too! Sweet or savory, corn pudding will not disappoint.

15. Brussels sprouts

Brussels sprouts can be quite intimidating because they are easily digestible. And when that happens, you get a bitter, sulfurous dish that doesn’t taste good at all.

But if you cook it properly, you get a tasty and nutritious dish that can be served with meatloaf.

To enhance the flavor of the kale, top it with maple syrup! This enhances their natural sweetness and gives them an exciting flavor. You can also mix it with a mustard sauce to soften the bitterness.

Here’s another idea: Make it with bacon! Why? Because bacon makes everything better, that’s why.

16. Fried vegetables

If you can’t decide which vegetables to serve with your meatloaf, serve them all!

Add a bright, healthy side to your meatloaf by roasting your favorite vegetables.

Chop the red and yellow peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, potatoes and red onions to prepare. Place them on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and roast in the oven.

The color combination is so beautiful it would put your meatloaf to shame.

17. Broccoli salad

Give your hearty meatloaf a light, leafy side dish with this easy broccoli salad. The broccoli gives a crisp contrast to the tender meatloaf.

Add a few dried cranberries, cashews, red onion and cheese to the salad for extra flavor and texture. Add a spicy sauce and you have a balanced side dish that complements your meatloaf beautifully.

18. Broccolini

Here’s another super vegetable that doesn’t seem to enjoy the same popularity as its cousin. Broccoli may not be as popular, but it’s just as delicious and nutritious.

To make a ridiculously delicious broccoli dish, just brush it with olive oil and garlic. Season with salt, pepper, red pepper flakes and lemon juice. Here’s how. It’s that simple, isn’t it?

19. Spaghetti

Meatloaf is such a high-protein dish that you might need a starch for a complete meal. And what could be more filling than classic spaghetti?

Another thing that makes meat spaghetti so delicious is the tomato sauce! This sweet and sour sauce complements the flavor of the meatloaf so well.

20. Figure

Speaking of starch, here’s another one that goes well with meatloaf. The rice itself is quite soft, but easily absorbs the flavors of all the ingredients you add to it. And that’s exactly why I love it! I can easily adjust it to fit the intake.

For a classic meatloaf, you can’t go wrong with another classic: American fried rice. The mixture of white rice, carrots, peas and scrambled eggs goes perfectly with your meat.

Or, if you want simple flavors, add a little lemon juice and cilantro to the steamed rice and let it go. Meatloaf is already rich in flavor, so a simple side dish balances all those flavors.

21. Koleslow

This page is for those who want to balance their high-calorie meatloaf with something light and nutritious. Classic coleslaw adds that delicious crunch to your tender meatloaf.

Coleslaw usually has a mayonnaise-based dressing, but you can also use low-fat yogurt for a healthier side dish. It’s still delicious, but without the calories!

22. Cream of mushroom soup

A thick soup is always a good side dish for meatloaf. One of my favorites is cream of mushroom soup.

It’s rich, creamy and so delicious! Mushrooms have a distinct, earthy flavor that you won’t find in other ingredients. It’s so delicious I even use it as a fake sauce for my meatloaf!

23. Mushrooms with sauce

Speaking of mushrooms, here’s another side dish that will complement the flavor of your meatloaf. I also love how easy it is to make! Just add the mushroom butter sauce and you’re done.

24. Apple pie

A rich and hearty meatloaf dinner calls for a refreshing dessert. End the meal on a fruity note by serving a delicious apple pie. It has the perfect balance of sweet and sour, crisp and tender.

25. Chocolate cake

For me, and for many people, chocolate is the ultimate comfort food. If you’re looking for a great way to end a meal, this is it.

The chocolate cake has a decadent filling that sits atop a crispy crust. It’s the perfect balance of textures.

And I know I’ve said many times that a balanced diet is important, but come on, no one can say no to chocolate! And it’s not like you eat it all the time, right? So go ahead and treat yourself…. You deserve it!

26. Lemon cake

Meatloaf is such a heavy, filling dish that you might want something light and refreshing for dessert. The lemon cake fits this perfectly as it is light, fluffy and downright delicious!

The tangy glaze is so refreshing that it contrasts with the richness of the meatloaf. It’s the perfect way to end a good meal.
