What to Serve with Meatball Subs: 9 Savory Side Dishes

For me, a meatball sandwich is the perfect sandwich. What’s not to like? The meatballs are firm and juicy, topped with a sweet marinara sauce and garnished with provolone and mozzarella cheese.

And then all of this goodness is baked into a bun with roasted garlic. One bite of this brilliant and savory sub gives me eternal happiness.

But you know what gives me even more pleasure when I eat a meatball sandwich? Eat it with the perfect side dish to complete the meal.

Here’s a tip for choosing meatballs: Choose milder tasting dishes. The meatball sandwich is already so rich, it needs something light and refreshing to balance it out.

If you are still in doubt, let me help you! Here are some of my favorite dishes to serve with meatballs.

1. Creamy cabbage salad

Coleslaw always goes well with sandwiches, and the meatball sandwich is no exception. The refreshing salad offers sweet flavors that contrast with the heaviness of the sub.

And it’s a snap – chop up some cabbage and carrots and drizzle with a sauce of your choice. You can opt for the classic mayonnaise sauce, but spicy vinegar works just as well. If you still want a creamy salad without the calories, use a low-fat mayonnaise or Greek yogurt.

2. Pasta salad

Here’s another light and refreshing side dish that goes well with meatballs: Pasta salad. What I love about this dish is its versatility. You can adapt it to your preferences if you stick to a basic formula: al dente pasta + vegetables + proteins + fats + herbs and spices + salad dressing.

Whether it’s tortellini with red bell pepper, zucchini and Italian dressing, butterfly pasta with tomato, prosciutto and pesto, or fusilli with broccoli, cucumber and vinaigrette, you really can’t go wrong.

3. Chips and Salsa

Give our American-Italian dish a Mexican twist by eating it with chips and salsa! The crispness of the fries contrasts nicely with the subtlety of the sub, making it a great combination.

Also think about it: you already made marinara sauce, so why not use it as a salsa? Sure, marinara might be a little thicker than salsa, but the flavor profiles are very similar. If you have leftover mozzarella, even better!

For this crunchy side dish, simply open a bag of tortilla chips, add marinara and sprinkle with mozzarella. Microwave for a few minutes or until cheese melts and you’re done.

4. Baked potato wedges

Okay, I know I’m breaking my rule about serving light meals with a meatball sandwich. But we all know potatoes are the perfect side dish! I prefer baked potato wedges for the meatballs. Because it’s a forgiving and soulful combination, save it for those days when you can treat yourself.

Cut the potatoes in half lengthwise, cut them in half again lengthwise and then in half again lengthwise. This should yield 8 equal wedges.

Coat the potatoes with a mixture of olive oil, garlic, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper.

Place the potatoes skin side down on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and bake 18 minutes at 390 degrees. Turn the points over and bake for another 17 minutes. Sprinkle with plenty of parmesan cheese and you’re done!

5. Turn

Now, back to the highlights of the meatball sandwich, here’s another one: Salad. Not only is it easy to make and nutritious, but it also gives a nice crunch that complements the sub well.

Like the pasta salad, you can customize this dish to suit your taste. Whatever leafy greens, veggies, proteins and dressing you choose will go well with your meatball sandwich. My favorite is spinach with apples or pears, walnuts or pecans and a simple balsamic sauce.

6. Desserts

This section is for those who, like me, have a sweet tooth and can’t finish the meal without dessert. However, with something as heavy as a meatball sandwich, you have to make a main thing about dessert (or not). Here are a few great options:

7. Fruit

The meatball sandwich is already high in calories, so why not opt for a simple piece of fruit to finish the meal? Treat your palate to something refreshing, like a few slices of apples, pears, watermelons, oranges, mangoes or peaches.

Or, if you have fruit, why not make a fruit bowl? Slice your favorite fruit, place in a bowl and drizzle with frosting or Greek yogurt.

8. short cake

You can also make a simple label of your fruit. Here’s how: Grab some ladyfingers (or cookies, or biscuits, the possibilities are endless), your favorite fruit (strawberries, mangoes, peaches, whatever you have) and whipped cream. Place in the refrigerator for at least two hours and serve!

9. Cupcakes

I know brownies are sinful, but they are a great ending to any meal, including meatballs. It is rich, decadent and breathtaking. Plus, it’s very easy to make.

Cupcakes are such an indulgence that even non-bakers can easily make them.

10. Chocolate cake

It’s another sinful dessert, but you can never go wrong by ending a meal with chocolate! So go ahead, treat yourself.
