17 Spicy chicken side dishesBBQ

1. Baked beans

Sweet beans are a classic on the barbecue. Combine white beans, bacon, onions, molasses, mustard, ketchup, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce for that classic baked bean flavor. You can cook it in a slow-cooker or on the stove. Anyway… It’s irresistibly good.

2. Koleslow

Whether you choose a rich, creamy mayonnaise salad or a tangy vinegar salad, the creamy salad pairs perfectly with the tangy flavors of the grilled chicken.

The two bones have a light, tangy flavor that balances the smoky taste of the chicken. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to lift! Simply grate the cabbage, onions and carrots, mix and season with your favorite sauces.

And if you’re in a hurry, you can always use a pre-packaged coleslaw for quick and easy prep.

Who doesn’t like macaroni and cheese? This side dish is so creamy and filling that it’s a welcome addition to any party – especially a barbecue! The cheese complements the smoky, spicy flavors of the barbecue and creates a savory partnership.

4. Corn bread

Cornbread is another staple for any backyard barbecue. Who ever heard of a cook without bread? I’m not talking about those ready-made mixes, of course. But make a sweet, soft, homemade cornbread.

Add butter or honey and you have a perfect accompaniment. If you really want to impress your guests, you can also serve it with jam or jelly. Yummy! Classic southern food.

5. Cookies

There’s nothing better than soft homemade cookies. Especially if you serve it with barbecued chicken, beans and all the trimmings. Spread some butter on it and you have a classic comfort dish that is sure to please the crowd.

Baking cookies for the first time? Here’s a hint: Don’t overdo it with your body or it won’t lift.

6. Greek Pasta Salad

What’s a barbecue without a pasta salad?

There are so many different types of pasta salads you can make. But my favorite is a good Greek pasta salad. With fusilli pasta, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives and feta cheese. This is a refreshing side dish that goes perfectly with a savory main course.

7. French fries

These fries taste so sinful you’d think they were fried, but they’re not – they’re baked! How do you get such rich, tasty fries without dipping them in tons of oil?

It is important that you boil them for 3 minutes before cooking them. This process breaks down the starch on the surface of the potatoes and makes them super crispy without having to cook them in too much oil.

You can leave the skin on or peel it – either way it will be incredibly delicious, especially when served with grilled chicken.

8. Sweet potatoes

Like the potato, its sweet cousin is a pleasant and tasty accompaniment. Whether you’re making sweet potato fries, baked sweet potatoes, or mashed sweet potatoes, you’re sure to satisfy a hungry crowd. The sweetness also softens the richness of the barbecue and makes it an excellent side dish.

9. Maize on the cob

Since you’re probably already using a grill, why not a corn cob?

This classic side dish goes perfectly with barbecued chicken. Brush with butter, a pinch of salt and pepper and you are ready for summer.

Sweet, crunchy, buttery corn on the cob is a crowd pleaser and perfect for barbecues, picnics and summer zucchini.

10. Corn pudding

Well, uh… Corn on the cob is a classic, but if you want to treat your guests, serve them a homemade corn pudding. It’s a classic, just like my grandmother used to make. You will be loved and cherished forever. Seriously… this is so good.

The best part is that it’s very easy to make. Just combine all the ingredients. Pour into the baking dish and bake. This sweet and creamy corn pudding is sure to be a favorite at any gathering.

11. Potato salad

When it comes to side dishes, potato salad is a classic. This dish does well with almost any appetizer, but especially with grilled chicken. Creamy, savory and very tasty.

Quick tip: Make the potato salad even richer by adding hard-boiled eggs to the mix.

12. Fried okra

Fried okra is a little less traditional, but these little treats are the perfect addition to any barbecue.

Moreover, this delicious southern dish is very easy to prepare. Dip the okra in cornmeal and bake until golden brown and crispy. You’d be surprised how quickly these guys disappear from the party table.

13. Fried green tomatoes

If you think tomatoes can’t stand on their own, think again! You’d be surprised how addictive fried green tomatoes are. For this dish, hard, unripe green tomatoes are sliced and dipped in cornmeal. They are then fried to perfection in butter or bacon fat. The result is a thin, tangy tomato wrapped in crisp dough. Yummy!

14. Watermelon

There is nothing more refreshing than freshly cut watermelon in the summer. This is an essential element for any garden barbecue. Plus, it’s super easy to set up. Cut thick wedges of watermelon, place them on a platter and watch them disappear! Especially on a hot summer day.

For a change, you can also grill the fruit. Peaches, nectarines and even watermelons are particularly delicious when grilled.

Grilling brings out the flavors and adds a smokiness that goes well with sweet and savory grilled chicken.

15. Figure

What could be better than serving a bowl of steaming white rice with barbecued chicken? The starch absorbs the smoked chicken sauce perfectly and gives it a phenomenal flavor!

Want a healthier version? Use brown rice instead. Brown rice takes much longer to cook and you should soak uncooked rice in water for at least 30 minutes before cooking.

16. Quinoa Salad

If you’re looking for an even lighter and healthier rice option, go for quinoa. This super grain is packed with protein, potassium, calcium and numerous other nutrients. It tastes just like rice, although crunchier, but still delicious.

Turn this grain into a salad by dressing it with tomatoes, basil, corn and mozzarella. Then drizzle with a balsamic vinaigrette for a refreshingly tangy taste.

17. Strawberry Shortcake

We must not forget dessert! No family dinner is complete without dessert. And in the summer, nothing beats a strawberry smoothie.

It’s the perfect summer dessert. Loaded with fresh strawberries, flaky cookies and whipped cream. It’s a sweet, creamy and refreshing way to end a meal.

And that’s it! Combine a few of these side dishes at your next barbecue and you’ll have a feast of kings (and queens :).
