But while the grilled cheese sandwich is undeniably delicious, you should pair it with a few other side dishes to make it truly filling.

When making grilled cheese sandwiches, choose side dishes with subtle flavors. Your main course already has such a strong flavor that you don’t want it on your side dish.

Choose light and refreshing fruit and vegetable dishes as often as possible, such as a simple green salad or vegetable soup.

If you’re still down, don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted! Here are some of the best side dishes to serve with grilled cheese.

1. Tomato soup

I don’t think there’s anything more classic than good old tomato soup paired with grilled cheese. They are perfect for each other! Imagine dipping your sandwich into a bowl of refreshing soup. Yummy!

Here’s a fun fact about the iconic duo: Their partnership began after World War II. They were served to children in school canteens to give them the nutritional value they needed.

Tomato soup is also easy and cheap to make – perfect for small schools where teachers had to both teach and prepare lunch for their students.

And don’t just serve canned tomato soup! Tomato soup with fresh heirloom tomatoes is easy to make and tastier too. Simply combine the tomatoes with the cream, chicken broth and onions. Shh, shh, shh!

2. Turn

As I mentioned earlier, you may want something refreshing to go with your expansive appetite, and a simple green salad is just what you need.

What I love about salads is that you can easily customize them to your own taste! Feel free to combine your favorite leafy greens, fruits, veggies, proteins, nuts, and cheese, and it’s sure to taste good.

As far as sauces go, whether it’s balsamic sauce, Dijon dressing, ranch dressing or queso sauce, you can’t go wrong.

3. Marinara sauce

We already know that grilled cheese is delicious with tomato soup, so it makes sense that it would go well with marinara sauce. So go ahead and spread some of that sweet and sour sauce on your bread and pretend you’re eating a pizza.

Crusty bread, fatty cheese and a sweet marinara sauce – it doesn’t get much better than this.

4. Jams, marmalades or chutneys

If you like sweet and savoury, fill your sandwich with jam, marmalade or chutney.

Whether it’s mango, orange or blueberry, the sweetness of the spread contrasts with the flavor of the cheese, creating a perfect harmony of flavors.

5. Ketchup and mustard

Grilled cheese is a sandwich after all, and sandwiches always need a little sauce! There’s nothing wrong with a bottle of ketchup and mustard to add some flavor.

6. Koleslow

This is another refreshing vegetarian dish that never disappoints. The cabbage and carrots add a gentle sweetness that softens the fat content of the cheese.

While you can certainly use a classic mayonnaise, I suggest you try a vinegar-based lighter. Grilled cheese is already rich, you don’t want to overpower the flavor with mayonnaise.

The vinegar coleslaw provides a refreshing contrast that is hard to resist.

7. Fruit salad

Again, the idea is to balance your rich, fatty dish with a light, refreshing side dish. A mix of your favorite fruits – mangoes, peaches, bananas, grapes, whatever you have – topped with a light Greek yogurt will make a wonderful contrast to your appetizer.

Just the combination of sweet fruit and tangy cheese makes my mouth water.

8. French fries

Here’s another sweet and awesome dish paired with grilled cheese. Sure, fries taste great, but the classic potato side dish can be so greasy that it becomes too heavy. Enter his equally beloved cousin …. Fries!

The fries are not only crispy, but also a sweet contrast to the sandwich. And because they are baked and not fried, they are much healthier than regular fries.

This is my favorite guilt-free treat. All with a sweet, salty and satisfying combination.

9. Dill pickle

We’ve already mentioned a few sweet dishes, it’s time to move on to something sour for a change. The dill pickle has a wonderful tangy flavor that contrasts with the flavor of the sandwich. It’s also a little spicy, which gives it a nice kick.

And instead of buying dill pickles in the supermarket, you can make it more interesting by making them yourself. It’s very simple!

Slice the cucumbers and red onion with your spiralizer and put them in the pot. Soak the vegetables in the mixture of vinegar and water, add salt, pepper and dill. Cover the jar and refrigerate for at least four hours.
