15 Southern Side Dishes For Fried Chicken

Cornish chickens are perfect for anyone who craves chicken, but doesn’t have a large family to share it with. This variety of chicken from Cornwall, England, is slightly smaller and has a milder flavor.

But the beauty is that because of its small size, it absorbs the flavors easily. That’s why I always rub it well with my favorite herbs and spices before I roast it.

And while Cornish hens can only satisfy a hungry person as a side dish, they are perfect for an intimate dinner for two.

Because it is tender and flavorful, many side dishes go well with Cornish hens, however you prepare them. Here are a few of my favorites.

1. Rice with mushrooms

Cornish hens are very sweet, so pair them with a starch to balance out their richness. Nothing beats a bowl of rice with mushrooms!

This dish is not only savory, it also has a nice earthy flavor thanks to the mushrooms. Whether you use white or brown rice, this dish goes perfectly with Cornish hens.

Preparation: Sauté mushrooms, green onions and garlic in butter. Add the cooked rice and chicken stock, salt, pepper and parsley. Mix until blended. Cover the dish and let simmer for 20 minutes.

2. Glass roots

For me, the best flavor combination is sweet and spicy. There’s something so irresistible about it! That’s why I like to serve glazed carrots with my Cornish hens.

They complement each other, not only in taste but also in texture. The crunch of the carrots contrasts wonderfully with the tenderness of the poultry.

Glazed carrots are also easy to make. Simply sauté the pre-cooked carrots, brown sugar and lemon juice in the butter for 2 minutes or until the sugar has dissolved.

3. Baked red potatoes

Here’s another starchy side dish that’s fantastic with Cornish chicken. Roasted red potatoes are delicious, filling and easy to prepare. Rub the red potatoes with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast them until golden brown!

Here’s a tip for choosing potatoes for this dish: Choose smaller red potatoes to make them easier to eat. If you only have large potatoes on hand, that’s fine too, but you’ll need to cut them into small pieces.

4. Potato scallop

I may be biased, but when it comes to side dishes, potatoes are king. That’s why I’m showing you a different potato dish! Like Cornish hens, scalloped potatoes are rich, tender and irresistible. They are so similar that they taste perfect.

  • Repeat steps 1 to 4 two more times.
  • Pour the hot milk over the whole dish. Bake the casserole at 375 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes.

5. Sweet potato chips

Like their cousin, sweet potatoes are fabulously delicious when roasted. Sweet potatoes are already delicious, but when you add Italian herbs and Parmesan cheese, they become even more delicious.

Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, these vegetables pair perfectly with Cornish hens. It not only balances the flavor of the bird, but also provides a crisp contrast to its tenderness.

6. Macaroni and cheese

Macaroni and cheese always tastes great with chicken, so it makes sense to serve this creamy dish with Cornish chicken.

Not only is it so delicious, but it’s also super savory, making it an exceptional dish to end a meal with.

Want to put a fun spin on this classic comfort food? Top the pan with chips for a deliciously crunchy surprise!

7. Row

The buttered buns are delicious with grilled Cornish hens. When you grill the bird, it oozes super rich and flavorful juices. That’s where the buns come in.

Use the bread to suck up the delicious juice and nibble. It tastes heavenly.

8. Fresh lettuce

If you want to add contrasting textures and flavors to your Cornish hen, opt for a fresh salad. No matter what vegetables, fruits, nuts, cheeses and dressings you add, the salad is always fresh, crisp and delicious.

And it’s good for your health! In short, it’s everything your Cornish chicken needs.

9. Corn pudding

Cornish hens may be English, but there’s nothing wrong with adding a southern flavor to your meal. Corn pudding is a sweet and savory pudding that balances the flavor of poultry.

However, you can also serve the spiced corn pudding with Cornish game hen, if you prefer. Preparation: Add a little thyme and onion to the batter before baking the pudding.

10. Brussels sprouts

Brussels sprouts may not be as popular as potatoes, but I also think they make a great side dish. When perfectly roasted, Brussels sprouts have a sweet, earthy, nutty flavor – flavors that pair well with Cornish game hen.

11. Broccolini

Like the Cornish chicken, broccoli is the little cousin of the better-known. It may be a lesser known relative, but broccoli is just as delicious as broccoli!

It is not only nutritious but also delicious, especially when seasoned with lemon and garlic.

Preparation: Garlic sauce in olive oil. Add the pre-cooked broccolini and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Season the broccoli with the lemon juice, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Serve and enjoy!

12. Maize on the cob

Let’s end this list with something simple, but effective. The Cornish hen is the star of this dish, and you won’t want to steal the show. That’s why the simple corn on the cob is a perfect match for Cornish game hen.

It’s sweet and juicy, but the flavors won’t overpower the bird. It is also very filling, making it a great dish to end your dinner with.
