That’s why I don’t understand why some people ignore pork as a main course. It’s more than just sandwich meat!

It’s a little disappointing that the top Google results for pulled pork are mostly sandwiches, when in reality pulled pork is so much more than that!

With the right pork side dishes, you can turn a gathering into a barbecue or an elegant summer dinner.

But finding the best locations for your barbecue or family reunion can be a real challenge. When grilling, the side dishes are just as important as the meat.

And especially with pulled pork, the side dishes can range from sweet to savory, sweet to crunchy, light to heavy, and everything in between!

Side dishes can be used as a refreshing break after the heavy meat or can be used to wipe the sauce residue off the plate. The possibilities are almost endless!

And that’s why I’m here today. I’ve compiled a list of the most delicious breads, salads and vegetables that will really enhance your pork experience. So, without further ado, let’s go!

1. Corn bread

Cornbread is a classic partner for pork. You can never go wrong with the combination of these two classics.

The best part is that it’s not too hard to make and you can have a lot of fun experimenting with different flavors!

A popular option these days is Cheddar-Jalapeño Cornbread, which combines the flavors of tangy cheddar and jalapeño with the classic taste of corn. The mixture of salt and sweet is the perfect complement to pork!

2. Sweetcorn fritters

Doughnuts are a crunchier alternative if you want a playful edge that young children will appreciate. You can’t go wrong with candy corn that turns into crunchy golden fried balls!

You can also take the North Carolina approach and pair your pork tenderloin with buttermilk hush puppies to add a sweet and crunchy element to your dish.

3. Honey butter cookies

If you’re wondering which side to choose, pick a honey butter cookie and all your problems will disappear. They are easy to prepare, quick to cook, and are a hit with kids and adults alike.

Just be careful not to leave them out for dinner, especially if there are kids around. They’re gone before you can say dinner is ready!

I also recommend you avoid those instant canned cookies. Trust me, you can make your cookies even more delicious, and it’s pretty easy to do.

The best way to garnish bread is to use it as a sponge to clean your plate and soak up leftover sauce. Yummy!

4. Pickle green

One of the best options for southern side dishes is Collard Greens. This site is almost everywhere, and for good reason.

You can count on spicy kale to enhance your pork dish, and kale recipes are so versatile you’ll always have a new experience!

5. Koleslow

Coleslaw is definitely a classic salad topper, and the best part is that there are so many options. A traditional coleslaw is always a good option, but if you’re watching your weight and calories, you can make a healthier version with low-calorie mayonnaise.

You can even make a completely vegan version with vegan mayonnaise or no mayonnaise at all, so vegans and vegetarians can enjoy the side dishes on your barbecue too!

6. Curtido Tomato and Onion Salad

It may not be the traditional southern side of pork, but experimenting and trying new things often yields good results. And believe us, it’s a stunning result!

This Spanish side dish of tomatoes, onions and lime adds a Latin kick to your barbecue that goes well with the meaty, earthy flavor of your pulled pork.

It’s a refreshing side dish that can help cleanse the palate and reset the taste buds for another serving of barbecue!

7. Pasta salad

If you want a filling side dish that is easy to prepare and can be served chilled, macaroni salad is a great option.

You can prepare it ahead of time so you don’t have too much to do while eating. You can make it early in the evening, put it in the fridge and have it ready the next day.

A macaroni salad can also be a fun way to introduce vegetables, especially for kids (and some adults) with a spicy palate.

8. Cucumber and tomato salad

This is a classic summer salad that can really add some freshness and crunch to your pork picnic. How can a combination of green peppers, red onions, cucumbers and tomatoes be bad?

Not only is it an easy and inexpensive preparation, but it is also a colorful addition to any pork dish.

9. Fruit salad

If you want to spice up a pork dish with something sweet or just can’t wait for dessert, grilled pork with a fruit salad works wonders.

It’s not as unlikely as you might think, as some pork options can be sweet. Serving a large bowl of fresh fruit salad is a great choice!

10. Green salad

This signature salad will always be the benchmark for green and healthy eating. By combining it with pork, you are balancing a heavy, high-protein meat with a light, refreshing, crunchy and, most importantly, healthy side dish!

11. French fries

A classic potato side dish, suitable for any occasion. The fries are easy to make, quick to remove and can be customized to your own style.

You can add different ingredients to change the taste of the fries, or cut them thick to make wedges.

12. Classic Rice Pilaf

If you want the thick pork to take center stage without distraction, rice pilaf is a great accompaniment to your rich pulled pork. How could it be otherwise, since it is a very versatile dish with subtle flavors that go well with any main course?

With different options, you can choose and exchange different rice pilafs depending on the dish or preferences of your guests.

13. Picnic potato salad

No barbecue is complete without a potato salad. The sweet and spicy potato salads go perfectly with the sliced pork.

But leave out the ready-made products from the store! The preparation of this classic dish is surprisingly simple and oh so delicious.

You can make a classic southern potato salad with potatoes, eggs, celery, sweet relish, mustard and mayonnaise with salt and pepper to taste.

14. Baked beans

Heavy pork cooked at low and low temperatures goes great with beans at low and low temperatures! Put these beans in the slow-cooker and add what you like, from brown sugar for sweetness to apple cider vinegar for a little spice. Then simmer until done.

You will thank the stars for this traditional combination and you will be satisfied!

15. Succotash

If you’re looking for a good mix of corn, vegetables and fruit, all in a sweet and salty blend, with a pinch of salt, Succotash is the perfect side dish for your pork!

Since it contains no meat, it is an ideal side dish for vegetarian and vegan guests. It has vegetables in it, so it’s very healthy. It’s colorful and cute, perfect for happy kids and kids at heart. The best part: It’s quick and easy to make!
